U.S. Reportedly Detains Sunni Leader In Tikrit

June 24, 2006 -- An Iraqi provincial official says U.S. troops have detained a top Sunni Muslim leader, Sheikh Jamal Abdel Karim al-Dabaan, and his two sons in a raid in the northern town of Tikrit.

The deputy governor of Salahaddin Province told Reuters that local officials are boycotting work to protest the arrests. The U.S. military has not confirmed the report of the raid.

In Baghdad today, two police officers were killed and three wounded in a roadside bomb blast early today in a Shi'ite neighborhood.

Police also reported finding the body of a man who had been handcuffed and shot dead elsewhere in the capital.

The latest violence comes after the Iraqi government imposed a daytime curfew in Baghdad on June 23 in an effort to quell sectarian and insurgent violence.
