Iraqi Troops Seize 'High-Level' Terror Suspect

21 June 2006

The U.S. military says Iraqi troops captured a "high-level" insurgent during a raid Wednesday in Baghdad.

U.S. officials say the wanted man, Noori Abu Hayder Al-Oqabi, led the assassination cell responsible for killing 14 Iraqi soldiers last month.

Members of the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq acted as advisers during Wednesday's raid. A military statement says Oqabi recently became the head of a "punishment committee" formed to carry out insurgents' "vigilante judgment."

Also today, a militant group with links to al-Qaida in Iraq announced it will kill four kidnapped Russians who worked at the Baghdad embassy.

The announcement, by the Mujahideen Shura Council, on an Internet web site said Moscow failed to meet the group's demands to withdraw from Chechnya.

The Russians were kidnapped early this month.

In another development, unknown assailants killed one of Saddam Hussein's senior defense lawyers. Police say Khamis al-Obaidi's body was found in Baghdad after he was abducted at his home. Obaidi is the third member of Saddam's legal team killed since the former leader's trial began last October.

In Baghdad today, a car bomb in the Shi'ite neighborhood of Sadr City killed two people.

The U.S. military is preparing to carry out DNA. tests to confirm that two mutilated bodies recovered Tuesday near the town of Yusufiyah, south of Baghdad, are the remains of two American soldiers. The soldiers were attacked and abducted on Friday.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
