Multiple Bombings in Kirkuk; At Least 16 Dead

13 June 2006

Authorities in northern Iraq say multiple bomb attacks Tuesday in the city of Kirkuk have killed at least 16 people.

The nearly simultaneous explosions also wounded many people. Several policemen are among the dead.

Officials say bomb blasts went off in Kirkuk's city center, near a police station and elsewhere.

Some of attacks are said to be suicide car bombings.

Today's multiple explosions came a day after the terror group Al-Qaida in Iraq named Sheik Abu Hamza al-Muhajer as its new leader, following the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Autopsy results released by the U.S. military Monday say Zarqawi died of injuries caused by aerial bombs dropped on a house where he was hiding near the city of Baquba, north of Baghdad, last week. American officials say there is no sign that he had been beaten or suffered gunshot wounds.

Also on Monday, the U.S. military said a coalition airstrike killed seven al-Qaida-linked insurgents and two children near Baquba.

U.S. Major General William Caldwell said the childrens' deaths were unfortunate, but they were inside a house with insurgents who were shooting at U.S. forces.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
