First Large Scale Production of Insensitive Munitions Begins at BAE Systems

The new, purpose built, BAE Systems high volume filling facility at Glascoed in the UK will move into the first large scale production of an insensitive munitions this month. Entering full scale manufacture reflects the Companys strategy to move supply insensitive munitions compliant ammunition to the UK MoD and other NATO customers to provide a battle winning capability whilst also significantly reducing risk and loss of assets in the event of an accident or inadvertent strike by enemy fire.
The high volume filling facility has completed commissioning on inert material and is now moving into filling using the Companys Rowanex 1100 Polymer Bonded Explosive (PBX) in 105mm and 155mm shells. The UK MoD will receive its first major delivery of 12,000 105mm High Explosive Improved Ammunition shell in October 2006.
This new facility has the capability to fill around 275,000 105mm shell or 100,000 155mm shell per year. It can also fill 4.5 naval shells. The sites unique flexibility will production to shift seamlessly these products.
