Revolutionary SEP Systems Completes 8000 Kilometres of Testing

12 Jun 2006

BAE Systems Hgglunds has completed 8,000 kilometres of test driving of its modular armoured tactical system SEP (Splitterskyddad Enhets Plattform).

SEP, with its focus on flexibility and modularity, is a light vehicle with electric drive and high loading capacity that can be transported by air. It is a military vehicle system available in both wheeled and tracked configurations, with interchangeable, specialised mission modules.

The first developed test rig, configured to tracked design, was designed to test the electric drive system, battery only silent running drive, rubber band tracks, brakes, speed, the vehicles electric system (Vetronics), fuel consumption and redundancy tests.

This was followed by a second vehicle, in a wheeled 6x6 configuration, which also tested the electric drive system. The six wheels can be controlled individually, enabling the vehicle to make a pivot turn (turning around its own axle). Furthermore, tests have been done on hillhold (ability to stand still in inclination with the help of electric motors) and EMC and software tests. Rigorous testing was also conducted in harsh winter conditions.

The third rig, weighing in at 17.5 tonnes, tested the degree of maturity of the electric drive system (e-drive) and the gear box (x-drive), focusing on reliability, brake tests, speed, steering, hillhold and EMC-tests.

A fourth test rig, recently has brought into the test programme, is a 17.4 tonne tracked vehicle focusing on the next generation electric transmission.

Another variant, the E-drive SIL, was developed for specific testing of SEPs e-drive capability, software, brakes and hydraulics.

Development will continue with one additional wheeled vehicle, a 8x8 wheeled configuration, expected at the end of 2006.
