MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations from Chile visited U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO) headquarters here June 5 through 7 to further enhance Theater Security Cooperation efforts with the U.S. Navy.
Vice Adm. Gerardo Covacevich was in Mayport to meet with Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command Rear Adm. James W. Stevenson Jr., and discuss each Navy’s perspective on regional security.
Commenting on the importance of the visit, Stevenson said, “We are honored to have hosted Adm. Covacevich and greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss important regional security issues. These meetings serve as the foundation for continued cooperation and open communications.”
During the NAVSO visit, Covacevich was introduced to the Foreign Liaison Officers (FLO), another element of Theater Security Cooperation. FLOs are naval officers assigned to NAVSO by their home countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. They serve important roles in assisting NAVSO as U.S. Southern Command’s Naval Component, and in coordinating maritime requirements and events between the U.S. and their own countries.
Covacevich also visited Sea Control Wing, U.S. Atlantic Fleet at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, where he met with Sea Control Squadron (VS) 31 and toured Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 44 at Mayport.
Remarking on the visit, Covacevich said partner nations in the region “have to deal with the threats in the 21st century, and NAVSO provides the right answer in working our challenges together.”
Covacevich’s other stops while in the United States include naval commands in Virginia and Rhode Island, and the headquarters of U.S. Southern Command in Miami.
