MEDITERRANEAN SEA (NNS) -- More than 1,300 U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel are participating in a series of scenario-related exercises with Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France and Spain in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean to enhance regional maritime and air capabilities May 30-June 13.

Named Phoenix Express, the series of exercises is focused on developing the individual and collective maritime proficiencies of participating nations, as well as promoting friendship, mutual understanding and strengthening regional partnerships. A comprehensive training agenda will provide the countries with numerous opportunities to operate together and develop productive relationships through diverse and challenging training scenarios.

“This exercise will provide U.S. and allied forces an opportunity to participate in diverse combined maritime training scenarios helping to increase maritime domain awareness and strengthen regional partnerships,” said Capt. Robert Bougher, commander, Amphibious Squadron 8.

The amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2), homeported in Norfolk, Va., and frigate USS Simpson (FFG 56) homeported in Mayport, Fla., will join ships and aviation assets from Morocco, Algeria, Spain and France for the series of related exercises. Training will include helicopter operations, search and rescue scenarios, maritime interception procedures, maritime maneuvering, refueling at sea, communications exercises, and liaison officer exchanges.
