BAE Systems awarded $40m contract extension by Defence Materiel Organisation
01 Jun 2006
Royal Australian Navy (RAN) ships will get further satellite communications capability thanks to a $40m dollar contract extension awarded to BAE Systems Australia. The Adelaide and ANZAC class frigates will be upgraded with a more enhanced communications system as a result of the modifications. This work is an extension of the successful JP2008 Phase 3E MILSATCOM Project, being managed by the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) Electronic and Weapons Systems Division.
BAE Systems will supply six additional Advanced SATCOM Terrestrial Infrastructure System Maritime Communications Element (ASTIS MCE) terminals, associated deployment kits and support, test equipment and a Maritime Training Suite under JP 2008 Phase 3E. The six terminals will be installed on-board the RANs vessels with the Maritime Training Suite being located at the Base Repair Facility at BAE Systems in North Ryde, Sydney.
JP 2008 Ph 3E is a vital element of the Australian Defence Force's (ADFs) emerging Network Centric Warfare infrastructure and the acquisition of additional terminals reinforces BAE Systems position in the provision of sophisticated satellite communications systems.
The ASTIS MCE terminal is the worlds first in-service simultaneous X and Ka-band terminal which is currently in service with the RAN and provides deployed naval platforms the capability to transfer C2 information using high data rate Super High Frequency (SHF) SATCOM technology.
Systems design for the terminals was developed in South Australia by BAE Systems, with the assembly, integration and testing carried out at the companys Edinburgh Parks headquarters.
