NEW YORK (NNS) -- The crew of the amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17) manned the rails May 24, as they took part in the Parade of Ships for Fleet Week New York City.

Fleet Week gives the citizens of New York a chance to see the Sailors and Marines that serve them on land and at sea.

“San Antonio is the newest ship in the fleet,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Chief Lawrence Adside, San Antonio’s air department leading chief petty officer. “It’s a great honor for the newest ship to be able to come here and express how we feel about the Navy and the citizens of New York.”

For some San Antonio Sailors, the journey to New York holds a special place in their hearts.

“I have been in the Navy for 11 years and I have always wondered what Fleet Week New York City would be like,” said Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class Jack Bustillos, San Antonio’s training department leading petty officer. “Being a member of the newest amphibious ship in the fleet, it gives me a sence of pride to enter the city of New York, a city I have lived in my whole life.”

Members of San Antonio’s crew look forward to taking part in events around New York highlighting the Navy’s support of the city.

“It’s a great opportunity to come back here to New York for Fleet Week,” said Adside. “The citizens of New York see the Navy’s presence here with the San Antonio and the rest of the ships here. We want to make them feel welcome as they have made us feel welcome.”

While in port, Sailors aboard San Antonio will take part in numerous community service projects including an environmental clean up of a local park and visit a local hospital.
