USS SAN ANTONIO, At Sea (NNS) -- The amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17) completed its first underway replenishment (UNREP) May 23 while transiting to New York City for Fleet Week.
The Atlantic Fleet’s newest ship was certified for refueling at sea with the help of USNS Arctic (T-AOE 8).
“The importance of this UNREP today,” said Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate (SW) Anthony DiFolco, San Antonio’s deck department leading chief petty officer, “was allowing the San Antonio the capabilities of replenishing for sustainment at sea without having to pull into port every time.”
San Antonio has prepared for UNREP with crew drills and mock ship pull-ups in preparation for the replenishment with Arctic.
“This is our first time alongside the Arctic, and the purpose of this is to certify our UNREP stations,” said Lt. j.g. Charles Spivey, San Antonio’s assistant 1st Lieutenant. "Things went very smooth for the first time doing this.”
The certification, according to DiFolco, was the result of crew’s hard work.
“The crew, deck department, engineers, the bridge teams, everyone performed flawlessly,” said DiFolco. “It was an excellent chance to do what we have been training to do for so long. Everyone did a great job, and it was very beneficial for everyone today.”
