Insurgents Kill 23 Across Iraq
23 May 2006
Iraqi police say insurgents have killed at least 23 people in a new wave of attacks across the country.
Among the most deadly attacks Tuesday were two car bombs that killed five people each. One blast went off while a police patrol passed by. The second blast was at a crowded market in the Shi'ite neighborhood of Sadr City.
Gunmen also killed two school teachers, one in Baghdad and one in Kirkuk.
The attacks come a day after Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki met Monday with visiting British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mr. Maliki said Iraqi forces will take over security from foreign troops in most of the country by the end of this year.
In other violence today, gunmen killed several people looking for work north of Baghdad, including four blacksmiths.
And police in the capital found the body of a young boy, blindfolded and shot in the head.
Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
