ANTIGUA (NNS) -- USS George Washington (CVN 73) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 17 Sailors experienced an island safari in Antigua during a Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) tour as part of the ship’s scheduled port visit to the island May 15-18.

Sailors on the tour traveled around the island in a 4x4 Safari Land Rover that took them through a rain forest and to Turner beach.

“I picked the tour because I love the forest and being able to see different kinds of animals,” said Aviation Electronics Technician Airman Apprentice Timothy Thompson of Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department’s IM-3 Division.

The first stop of the tour was to Body Pond valley, where Sailors were able to get a view of the whole island.

“When we stopped to look over the entire hillside, I could see the vibrant colors of the island from the viewpoint,” said Machinist's Mate Fireman Charles Javins of Engineering Department’s A Division.

After a short break, the tour guide took the group through the forest and pointed out all the different types of fruits and animals.

“They have some beautiful, breath-taking sights, and the tour guide’s jokes were very humorous, making him someone you will remember and never forget when reflecting about the trip,” said Machinist's Mate Fireman (SW) Tom Monroe of A Division.

The last stop on tour was Turner beach, a beach with a view of the volcanic island, Montserrat.

“Turner’s beach was the best part of the tour for me, because it was a nice place to relax, and it was very appealing,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Jacob Jarvis of IM-3.

George Washington’s MWR offered many other tours during the ship’s four-day port visit, including snorkeling trips, golf outings and sunset cruises.
