YORKTOWN, Va. (NNS) -- Naval Submarine Torpedo Facility’s Torpedo Training Center, a tenant command at Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Yorktown, Va., held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new, 12-student Navy Multipurpose Electronic Classroom (NMEC) May 19.

The ceremony began with an invocation by NWS Yorktown Chaplain, Lt. Cmdr. David Cromer, followed by speeches from Mary Wohlgemuth, head, Torpedo Systems, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport; Capt. David A. Portner, program manager, Undersea Weapons Program Office; and Cmdr. Gregory Dawson, commanding officer, Naval Submarine Torpedo Facility Yorktown.

“It is vitally important that we understand how our weapons work, how reliable they are, and are confident that when we are called to use them, they will serve their purpose,” said Portner. “This classroom will better train the Sailors that will be using those weapons.”

Machinist's Mate 1st Class James Hoggard, lead offline instructor at Torpedo Training Center Yorktown, clarified the role that instructors will hold in the new electronic classroom.

“Instructors will go away and become facilitators,” said Hoggard. “It will be similar to an NKO (Navy Knowledge Online) course; you log on, do your course, take your test, and instructors will monitor your progress.”

The most recent Offline Technical School class at Torpedo Training Center graduated during the ribbon-cutting ceremony, with Machinist's Mate 3rd Class Justin Wilson as its graduate of honor.
