ABOARD USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea (NNS) -- NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer visited USS Enterprise (CVN 65) while it was conducting operations from the Mediterranean Sea, just hours after the ship got underway from a successful port visit in Split, Croatia, May 20.
De Hoop Scheffer was a guest of Adm. Harry Ulrich, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe.
During his visit, De Hoop Scheffer was escorted by Enterprise Executive Officer Capt. O. P. Honors through the ship’s hangar bay, navigation bridge, and the flight deck, where they observed flight operations.
“To be able to pull anchor, get underway and commence flight operations to bring our guests on board all within a few hours really shows the versatility of this crew,” said Honors.
The visit is one of several distinguished visitor (DV) visits Big E has conducted since the ship arrived on station in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. Within the last week, Big E has hosted dignitaries and military officials from Morocco, Bulgaria, Croatia and other European allies. The visits encourage partnership between the United States and her friends in the U.S. 6th Fleet.
“We are always honored when we can host our allies and partners on board and show them what Big E can do,” said Honors. “It lets them see firsthand all the hard work our Sailors and Marines are doing to accomplish the mission, maintaining prompt and sustained combat operations from the sea. And it also shows them see how strong our presence is in the global war on terrorism.”
Enterprise, along with Carrier Strike Group 12, is currently on a regularly scheduled six-month deployment and is operating in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
