PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 28, based in Shreveport, La., began their field exercise (FEX) April 17 at Port Hueneme, Calif.
The reserve battalion joined an active-duty battalion, a Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit and an Underwater Construction Team.
“The battalion was tasked with deploying an air detachment for establishment of a forward operating base, explained Lt. Cmdr. Daryll Long, NMCB 28's operations officer. "We were also tasked with providing convoy security teams."
In addition to establishing forward camp facilities, Seabees underwent drills to prepare them for combat. Seabees constructed a bridge, completed construction on a bunker, created a water purification unit, and worked on a road construction project.
For many, this was the first time any training had been conducted under combat scenarios.
“This was my first FEX as a Seabee, and I was very impressed with the training. The training in dealing with civilians was very realistic,” said Construction Electrician 2nd Class Richard Cockerham of Detachment 07.
SUPERFEX is the pinnacle of Seabee training. Once a battalion is determined to be ready for deployment, the unit can be expected to deploy shortly in support of current missions.
NMCB 28 is expected to deploy in early 2007. Their last deployment to Camp Covington, Guam, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, concluded in August 2003.
