PACIFIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Sailors of USS Dubuque (LPD 8) got a chance to relax and enjoy a barbecue on their flight deck May 9.

A “steel beach” picnic was authorized during the underway transit to San Diego. The purpose of the event was to boost the morale and instill camaraderie among the crew.

“This kind of event is traditional. The steel beach picnic is what we do to break up the monotony, build morale of the Sailors, and the crew really loves it," said Lt. Cmdr. Timothy Buckland, executive officer of Dubuque. "It has a good turnout.”

The ship's First Class Petty Officers Association sponsored the event by providing the food and labor involved with serving and cleaning. Culinary specialists (CS) also put forth a great effort in preparing the food. Marinated steaks, chicken breasts, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, sodas and all the condiments were served to the crew.

“I love to see the first classes working," said Chief Operations Specialist (SW) Bruce Laipple. "Plus, the CSs did a phenomenal job of setting up for the event. A lot of hard work and effort was initiated to coordinate this.”

The Sailors were also provided with the option to wear civilian clothes during the event and listened to recorded music.

“This event makes everything a lot better, because you can wear your own clothes and get away from the job, stress, and everything else,” said Seaman Joshua Doherty of deck department.

There are many events such as this that are provided by the chiefs and first class petty officers to boost the spirits and build the social atmosphere between the Sailors of the ship.

“These events haven’t happened often in the past, but now with the chiefs' and first classes’ participation, there are more good things to come,” said Laipple.
