General Dynamics to Provide IT Services to Hurricane Ravaged Air Force Hospital in Mississippi

NEEDHAM, Mass. – General Dynamics Network Systems was recently awarded a delivery order valued at approximately $4 million under the Network Centric Solutions (NETCENTS) program to expand and restore voice communications for the hospital at Keesler Air Force Base, damaged by Hurricane Katrina last year. General Dynamics Network Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD).

General Dynamics will engineer, furnish and install a modern telecommunications system to support users at Keesler AFB, in Biloxi, Miss. General Dynamics will provide products and services for voice network infrastructure off the host MSL-100 Voice Switching System to support the 6,500 line restoration/ expansion, including converting the hospital telephone system to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology that will serve 3,500 users. When completed, this will be one of the largest deployments of VoIP within the Air Force.

Keesler is home to the second-largest medical facility in the Air Force. The hospital’s communications system was destroyed when Hurricane Katrina devastated the base last year. During the crisis, the Keesler Medical Center was evacuated and since then has only been able to provide minimal outpatient care for local service members. The medical center has a staff of approximately 2,000 and is also a training facility that educates doctors, nurses and technicians in a variety of medical specialties. Keesler AFB is also home to the Department of Defense's weather school.

In 2004, the U.S. Air Force awarded one of eight NETCENTS contracts to General Dynamics to provide information technology, networking and voice, video and data communications products and services in support of the Air Force's global information requirements.
