CHESAPEAKE, Va. (NNS) -- The White House Office of the National Drug Control Policy (ONCP) recognized the Navy’s Forces Surveillance Support Center’s (FSSC) contributions to the war on illegal drugs May 9 in a ceremony at Naval Support Activity Northwest Annex, in Chesapeake, Va.
FSSC received the award for its significant efforts to counter the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. through the use of the Navy’s Relocatable Over-the-Horizon Radar system.
“You have been a critical part in six straight years of increased [drug] seizures,” said John Walters, director of ONCP. “You have given us the capacity to see and to identify and to move strained resources for interdiction and takedown in a precise and effective way.”
The FSSC has increased its abilities over the years through technology, as well as through the efforts of its employees.
“What this center has done over a number of years now is improved its own use as a tool to locate threats to the United States through the genius of the people who work here,” said Walters. “The reason we have been more successful is because they have been able to tell us where to use our assets for arresting and intercepting [illegal drugs].”
Walters said that although the war on drugs will take time, centers like the FSSC make winning the war possible.
“You are truly a national intelligence collection asset without equal,” said Walters. “Your dedication and supreme commitment are most heartily commended and appreciated.”
