POINT LOMA, Calif. (NNS) -- Sailors from the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Jefferson City (SSN 759) returned to Naval Base Point Loma May 1, following a six-month western Pacific deployment in support of national security objectives.
“We’re glad to be home. These Sailors completed everything that we put in front of them,” said Cmdr. Daryl Caudle, commanding officer of Jefferson City. “We completed two missions and numerous operations.”
The crowd of friends, family and fellow submariners from Submarine Squadron 11 welcomed the Sailors home with cheers, flowers, music, and hugs and kisses.
“If you want to be proud of someone, be proud of the man standing next to you,” said Caudle to his crew.
Jefferson City Sailors made port calls in Guam, Singapore, Hawaii, Yokosuka and Sasebo, Japan.
“The port visits were special because my family was able to come out and meet me,” said Chief Fire Controlman (SS/SW) Michael Barry, fire control department leading chief petty officer aboard Jefferson City. The deployment was Barry’s last in the Navy.
For another Sailor aboard Jefferson City, it was his first deployment.
“It was a good experience,” said Machinist’s Mate Fireman (SS) Lawren Gillespie, a mechanic assigned to Jefferson City. “I understand what goes on aboard a sub now, and that will help my career.”
Submarines like Jefferson City ensure undersea superiority and provide forward presence to ensure U.S. interests are defended. Their persistence, stealth, agility and firepower make them a multimission stealth platform capable of disrupting and destroying an adversary’s military and economic operations at sea.
