ST. KITTS, Netherlands, Antilles (NNS) -- USS Monterey (CG 61), currently participating in “Partnership of the Americas,” arrived in St. Kitts, Netherlands, Antilles, May 2 for a scheduled goodwill port visit.

More than 400 crew members will have a chance to sightsee, enjoy recreational activities and participate in a community relations project with the citizens of St. Kitts, as well as a soccer game with the local police department.

St. Kitts marks the second port call for Monterey, which left its homeport of Norfolk, Va., April 4. The ship visited Aruba April 12–15.

“Our time ashore is just as important as our underway operations, because we actually engage with our regional partners and strengthen our ties to them,” said Capt. Robert Oldani, Monterey’s commanding officer.

“The USS Monterey’s crew were outstanding ambassadors in Aruba, and I'm expecting more of the same here. Through our engagement ashore, we let them know how important they are to us,” Oldani said.

Monterey is part of the USS George Washington (CVN 73) Carrier Strike Group taking part in Partnership of the Americas, a deployment designed to enhance regional maritime security and strengthen ties through operations and exercises with Caribbean and Latin American partner nations.

Since leaving her homeport, Monterey has conducted unit-level training, participated in a community relations project and engaged in counter-narco-terrorism surveillance.

Monterey was commissioned in 1990. The ship is 567 feet long, 55 feet wide and displaces more than 9,000 tons. The ship can reach speeds of more than 30 knots.
