PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. (NNS) -- USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) arrived at Port Everglades, Fla., April 24 for a port visit as part of the ship’s current training schedule. The Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will remain at anchor off the coast.

The officers and crew of Ike, embarked Commander, Carrier Strike Group 8, Commander, Destroyer Squadron 28, and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7 departed Naval Station Norfolk April 12 and began their Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), a major requirement for the Eisenhower Strike Group’s certification as ready for deployment.

COMPTUEX is designed to train the ship, embarked air wing and other units that make up the carrier strike group to function as one highly effective fighting force.

While in port, the approximately 5,000 crew members will have a chance to sightsee and enjoy recreational activities in and around Broward County and South Florida.

"Visiting Broward County and South Florida is something many of our Sailors have been looking forward to for a long time," said Capt. Dan Cloyd, commanding officer of Ike. "They have been working extremely hard, and this port visit is a well-earned break. South Florida continues to be a favorite port visit for our Sailors, and the Navy and the communities of South Florida share a very long and special relationship."

This is the ship’s first port call since 2000, when the ship last visited South Florida prior to beginning a four-year mid-life overhaul. The port call is not related to the community's Fleet Week activities scheduled for the following week.

Ike was commissioned in 1977. The ship is 1,092 feet long, and displaces more than 95,000 tons. The flight deck covers more than 4.5 acres. The ship can reach speeds greater than 30 knots.
