USS ANZIO, At Sea (NNS) -- Pilots of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 46, the Grandmasters, Detachment 9, are flying a series of training missions aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) as part of their participation in Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), which runs through May 12.

The Grandmasters concentrate their COMPTUEX training on anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare in correlation with Anzio’s overall mission.

“Efficiency is a product of training, and that is what we are doing now,” said Lt. Cmdr. Todd Bonham, Grandmasters officer-in-charge. “Every day we find a new and better way of negotiating problems; challenges that seemed insurmountable become realistic and even routine because the detachment has become proactive and synergistic. Training is everything.”

COMPTUEX has given the Grandmasters a chance to improve in search and rescue missions, Maritime Interdiction Operations, logistics, and naval gunfire support, said Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 1st Class James Macfarlane, Grandmasters lead air crewman.

“COMPTUEX has allowed our squadron to integrate with the Anzio crew to function as an efficient combat team,” said Macfarlane. “Experience and training is the key to any successful squadron and team.”

The Grandmasters are based in Naval Station Mayport, Fla., and will complete COMPTUEX with Anzio as part of their pre-deployment preparation.
