Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has decided to constitute a committee, to be headed by himself, to review the situation in the north and eastern parts of the island.

"We are waiting for the response from Kilinochchi for next action," said newly appointed Defense spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella in Colombo, Friday.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, minister for policy planning and the newly appointed defense spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella will be the members of the committee, Doordarshan (Indian government news channel) correspondent reported from Colombo.

The Chief of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Gen. Ulf Henricsson and senior Norwegian diplomats rushed to Kilinochchi earlier in the day to make a last ditch effort to make the Tamil Tigers come for talks.

Earlier in the day, the Sri Lankan government also sent a strong warning that if the Geneva peace talks fail to take place or were postponed, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) will be solely responsible for the subsequent consequences.

Addressing the media in Colombo, the newly appointed Defense spokesman and senior minister, Keheliya Rambukwella said that the government has "stretched to the maximum" and the Tigers will be held 'responsible for all the consequences that may follow'.

Stressing that the government is keen to save the peace talks from collapsing, he informed that the chief of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Gen. Ulf Henricsson and senior Norwegian diplomats have reached Kilinochchi to make a last ditch effort to convince the rebels to participate in the talks.
