From Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe/Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet Public Affairs

NAPLES (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter visited Naples, Italy, April 21 as part of a visit to meet with Sailors and staff throughout the U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of operations (AOR).

He was greeted by Commander, U. S. Naval Forces Europe Adm. Harry Ulrich upon arrival at the base before an afternoon of activities, including meeting with Sailors and touring base facilities.

During a town hall meeting, Winter addressed 300 Sailors and civilians from the Naples area, discussing topics ranging from Navy transformation to the makeup of tomorrow’s Navy.

“We must be more adaptive and prepared to deal with emerging threats to the South and East of Europe,” the Secretary said, stressing the importance of transformation.

His tour of the AOR began Tuesday with a trip to the African nation of Ghana before visiting USS Emory S. Land (AS 39), currently deployed to the Gulf of Guinea from its homeport of La Maddalena on the Italian island of Sardinia.

“This has been the best part of my trip so far, meeting the Sailors who are out there every day, hard at work, making things happen,” Winter said.

During his two-day visit to Naples, Winter will meet with Naval Forces Europe and 6th Fleet leaders to discuss ongoing initiatives and programs, hear from Sailors during a town hall meeting, and tour work and support facilities.

Winter is the 74th Secretary of the Navy and was sworn into office Jan. 3 of this year.
