PALMA DE MAJORCA, Spain (NNS) -- Sailors of USS Nassau (LHA 4) hosted a U.S. 6th Fleet reception for hundreds of guests while anchored for a port visit to Palma de Majorca, Spain, April 13.
The visit is the final port for Nassau crew members, embarked staff of Amphibious Squadron 6 and Marines of 22 Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) as they continue their transit home after more than four months of successful maritime security operations (MSO) in the U.S. 5th Fleet.
Attending the reception was Marine Gen. James L. Jones, Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and Vice Adm. John “Boomer” Stufflebeem, Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet and Deputy Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe.
The three-hour reception began with the 6th Fleet Band playing “Anchors Aweigh” while descending the ship’s port aircraft elevator. As the elevator settled, the band honored the guests with national anthems of both Spain and the United States.
“The Sailors and Marines are honored and privileged to be here,” said Capt. Marty Allard, Commander, Nassau Strike Group.
Nassau’s culinary specialists prepared and served a light, yet varied buffet of hors‘d oeuvres as the 6th Fleet Jazz Combo kept the hangar bay filled with music.
Nassau Sailors and Marines escorted guests to the flight deck for tours and an opportunity to learn about the ship’s mission. Static displays with Sailors and Marines as subject matter experts were available to inspire curiosity and questions about the last five months.
Attending the reception were members of the Palma Navy League and government officials and military personnel from the island. Receptions such as the one held aboard Nassau serve to build relationships and increase ties with allies.
“I want to express many thanks to the Nassau for having arranged such a wonderful fly out, and reception for our membership,” said John Graham, president of the Palma Navy League. “We have been able to recruit a further 14 members because of the Nassau’s great efforts.”
Nassau is in route to Norfolk, Va., following a scheduled six-month deployment in support of Maritime Operations in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.
