Norway's new peace envoy to Sri Lanka Jon Hanssen-Bauer, who arrived in Colombo on Tuesday, will meet PM Ratnasiri Wickremanayake in a bid to save the island's troubled peace process amid an upsurge in violence.

He will meet with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri
Wickremanayake later in the day and the Tamil Tiger leadership on Thursday, a Doordarshan (New Delhi's news channel) said here quoting the Norwegian embassy in Colombo.

The visit is aimed at saving the island's faltering ceasefire in the face of a standoff between Colombo and the Tamil Tigers over their participation in the talks scheduled in Switzerland on April 24.

The Tigers have said that without an internal meeting of their commanders they will not participate.

The Tigers on Saturday cancelled a movement of Tiger leaders from the island's east to the north saying the Sri Lankan Navy was interfering with their boat movement.

The government, which had earlier turned down a request for a helicopter ride for the Tigers, bucked down from their stand and agreed to allow the guerillas to use privately hired choppers.

Meanwhile, the military said they discovered more claymore mines in Sri Lanka, a day after eight people were killed in two explosions.
