Israel Weighs Response to Monday's Suicide Bombing
Jerusalem
18 April 2006
Israeli Prime Minister-designate Ehud Olmert met with his Cabinet and security chiefs Tuesday to discuss how Israel should respond to Monday's suicide bombing in Tel Aviv, which killed nine people and injured dozens more. Security sweeps are under way, but there is no indication of further immediate military retaliation.
Israeli Public Security Minister Gideon Ezra attended Tuesday's cabinet session. Ezra told Israel Radio the government would not announce any specific plans, so as not to tip-off Palestinian militant groups.
Israel has already said it holds the Hamas-led Palestinian government responsible for Monday's attack, which was carried out by a young suicide bomber linked to Islamic Jihad.
The question was whether Israel would now target the Hamas government, or launch large scale military operations.
There is no indication that such action is imminent. Israeli forces have already launched security sweeps in the northern West Bank, and arrested dozens of suspected militants. Those types of operations are expected to increase.
