Suicide Bomber Kills 8, Injures Dozens in Tel Aviv
Jerusalem
17 April 2006
A Palestinian suicide bomber has killed at least eight people and wounded more than 30 others in central Tel Aviv. Two Palestinian militant groups are claiming responsibility.
The bomber detonated his explosives at a fast food restaurant near Tel Aviv's old bus station shortly before two o'clock in the afternoon local time.
Within minutes, ambulances rushed to the scene and rescue service officials spoke of a large number of injured.
Two Palestinian militant groups, Islamic Jihad and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, have separately claimed responsibility for the blast.
Islamic Jihad had threatened attacks to avenge the recent killing of 18 Palestinians in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.
It was the first such bombing since Hamas took over the reins of the Palestinian government last month.
The bombing shattered the calm of the Jewish Passover holiday week and comes despite increased security measures during this holiday period.
