Car Bomb Kills 20 at Iraqi Mosque

12 April 2006

A car bomb has killed at least 20 people outside a Shi'ite mosque near the Iraqi city of Baquba.

Officials say several other people were wounded in Wednesday's blast. Earlier in the day, several explosions across Iraq killed three American soldiers and four Iraqis.

The attacks come as Shi'ite leaders are trying to break a deadlock over their candidate for prime minister ahead of Monday's session of parliament. Kurdish and Sunni Arab politicians have rejected the Shi'ite candidate, current Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari.

In Egypt, Arab foreign ministers discussed the situation in Iraq at a Cairo meeting boycotted by Iraq because of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's recent comments questioning the loyalty of Iraq's Shi'ites. Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa says it would have been better if Iraq had taken part in the meeting.

Separately, the trial of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was adjourned after handwriting experts scheduled to testify during Wednesday's session failed to show up in the Baghdad court.
