2 Palestinians Wounded in Israeli Artillery Strike

10 April 2006

Palestinian officials say Israeli artillery shells struck the northern Gaza Strip, wounding two people.

Palestinian security officials say the shells landed near a home in a farming area early Monday.

The Israeli army says it was firing artillery toward suspected rocket-launching sites, but could not confirm whether a house had been struck.

Israel has stepped up strikes in Gaza in response to homemade rocket attacks by Palestinian militants.

Israel severed ties with the new Hamas-led Palestinian government Sunday, calling the Palestinian Authority a "hostile entity."

Acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel would try to undermine the Hamas-led government and shun foreign officials who meet with Hamas members during trips to the region.

Mr. Olmert also vowed no let-up in Israeli attacks. Such attacks since Friday have killed 15 Palestinians, mainly militants.
