USS DUBUQUE (NNS) -- USS Dubuque (LPD 8) hosted 18 Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) members April 4.

Sailors explained the ship’s mission, their training and how the ship overcomes challenges at sea to the CFR members.

“What you've got here is some very influential people who care a lot about our foreign policy,” said Air Force Col. Mark Bucknam, senior military fellow on the CFR. “Today, there is a high military content to our foreign policy.”

The CFR is a nonprofit U.S. organization dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students and interested citizens, can better understand the world and foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments.

“It helps [the CFR’s mission] to actually see military equipment, talk to people who operate that equipment - from the newest member of our military up to the four-stars,” said Bucknam.

“What I hope [the CFR] gains is an appreciation for what young Sailors are doing for their country and foreign relations,” said Capt. William Hamiliton, commanding officer of Dubuque. “The young [Sailors] are the ones running the ship.”

CFR members toured the ship’s combat information center and were briefed about ship operations and communications while at sea and asked questions about Dubuque’s weopons, technology and Sailor retention levels. The visitors also toured the well deck and were briefed on the different vehicles used in amphibious operations.

Dubuque is the fifth Austin-class amphibious transport dock ship. This class of ship combines three functions: dock landing, personnel transport and cargo handling. She has contributed to two deployments to the Persian Gulf in support of the global war on terrorism.
