USS BONHOMME RICHARD, At Sea (NNS) -- The San Diego-based Multipurpose Amphibious Assault Ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) earned high scores in multiple mission areas during their unit-level training assessment (ULTRA C) from March 28-31.
During two intense days of drills, the ship’s crew demonstrated the ability to effectively combat shipboard causalities and defend the ship from simulated attacks.
"The crew of BHR came through again and impressed the Afloat Training Group with their professionalism and ability to get the job done," said BHR Commanding Officer, Capt. Steve Greene.
BHR began ULTRA C after successfully completing a six-month, $30 million Docked Planned Maintenance Availability (DPMA).
"I attribute the crew's success to always keeping a positive attitude and keeping the level of training at a constant high," said Greene. "Through the entire maintenance period, the crew stayed on its toes by training for different scenarios and remaining ready to respond to any situation."
ULTRA C is part of SHIPTRAIN, the Navy’s new training construct that reduces the time it takes for a ship to be certified as deployable from 16 weeks to approximately four weeks without compromising the level of readiness. SHIPTRAIN was developed to support the Fleet Response Plan and make more ships available for operations around the world.
BHR is currently operating off the coast of Southern California, preparing of future operations in support of the global war on terrorism.
