USS NASSAU, At Sea (NNS) -- Capt. John E. Roberti relieved Capt. Michael W. Brannon as commanding officer (CO) of USS Nassau (LHA 4) while on deployment in the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Operations, April 1.
With more than 1,300 Sailors and Marines witnessing the passing of authority and responsibility during this traditional change of command ceremony, Brannon felt the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.
“This is the best time to have a change of command ceremony, at sea,” he said. “A new CO can’t learn the ship pierside. I would like to thank Capt. Roberti. You were a great executive officer and you’re going to be a better CO.”
Under Brannon’s leadership, Nassau departed Norfolk, Va., Nov. 7, on its current six-month deployment, successfully supporting maritime security operations (MSO). MSO help preserve the free and secure use of the world's oceans by legitimate mariners and prevent terrorists from attempting to use the maritime environment as a venue for attack or as a medium to transport personnel, weapons or other material that could support their efforts. In addition, coalition assets like Nassau also assist mariners in distress as part of MSO.
“It’s been my pleasure to be the CO, but the crew, you guys make it all happen,” said Brannon. “You are the ones that deserve a pat on the back. For this ship to be 27 years old, she looks like she’s in her teens and it’s because of each you. You Sailors come to work everyday with a sense of purpose and meaning.”
Brannon was awarded his third Legion of Merit during the ceremony. His next duty station will be the Board of Inspection and Survey, Navy Department.
A graduate of Pennsylvania State University, Roberti is no stranger to Nassau. In November 2000, he assumed the duties as Nassau’s air boss. He later returned in July 2004 as executive officer, and is now the ship’s commanding officer.
“When one gets to this point in his career, there are a lot of people to thank – family, friends, mentors, shipmates and former shipmates,” said Roberti. “Capt. Brannon, I want to thank you for the steadfast leadership, mentorship and friendship. You remained focused on improving Nassau from day one, and you never wavered. I appreciate the opportunity to serve with you and I look forward to the coming years of drawing on your mentorship and friendship. You should be proud of everything you accomplished on Nassau.”
“To the crew, my expectations are clear and straight forward," he added. "I really look forward to getting a chance to talk to you, hearing your concerns and answering your questions.”
Nassau is currently on the final leg of a six-month deployment. The ship is scheduled to return to its homeport of Norfolk, Va., in May.
