6 Shot Dead in Afghanistan

30 March 2006

Six people have been shot and killed in Afghanistan, and a suicide car bomber targeting a Canadian military convoy killed himself by detonating prematurely.

Police say suspected Taleban insurgents ambushed District Governor Mohammad Qadir and three of his staff in Laghman province near Kabul.

In the southern city of Kandahar, officials say at least seven civilians were wounded when the suicide bomb was detonated prematurely.

In a separate attack, suspected Taleban militants killed a local security commander and his brother in the southern province of Helmand.

Violence has escalated in Afghanistan since the Taleban vowed a major spring offensive against foreign and Afghan government troops.

Wednesday, U.S.-led troops and Taleban insurgents battled for hours in southern Afghanistan. An American soldier and a Canadian soldier, along with 32 insurgents, were killed.
