WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Sailors now have an easier way to access overhaul and repair standards for surface ships with the release of the General Specifications for Overhaul of Surface Ships (GSO) on the World Wide Web in March.

According to Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) GSO Program Manager Paul Horacek of NAVSEA’s Fleet Naval Engineering Group and Maintenance Process Improvement (SEA 05N) team, the new Web-based module, which can be accessed via the SEA04RM/05N Web site at https://maintenance.navsea.navy.mil/domino/gso/gso/gso_main.asp provides a flexible and real-time way to distribute current overhaul and repair specifications for surface ships.

“Putting GSO on the Web eliminates any confusion as to what is the latest technical requirement or specification for use during overhauls or repairs to surface ships,” Horacek said. “The latest updates will be posted as soon as they are approved and will be available to the fleet maintainer. We think this is a step forward in helping to make Sailors’ jobs a little easier when it comes to surface ship overhaul, maintenance or repair.”

This new Web-based version of the GSO eliminates some of the hassle Sailors must currently go through to ensure they have the latest specifications. Current updates require letters to the fleet and maintenance and overhaul facilities. Sailors are then responsible for reading the original document, as well as ensuring they have all the updates. When enough changes warrant it, a revised version of GSO would be generated and mailed as a CD-ROM.

With the new GSO module, Sailors can download the most current version of the section they are interested in and know that they have the most up-to-date version. They can also track a record of change for each section, have the ability to receive real-time updates of individual sections, as well as have access to a combined, searchable document.

The basic GSO and Aegis supplement will no longer be published and forwarded via CD-ROM, although the nuclear supplement will remain in, and be forwarded as hard copy CD-ROM due to security requirements. Requests for copies of this supplement must be made to Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Code 223.

According to Horacek, new GSO module users will need to acquire an account to the SEA04RM/05N Web site and associate it with their valid PKI certificate before they can obtain access to the GSO module. Those users who had accounts prior to Oct. 1, 2005, are still able to use their login and passwords. New users, however, must have a PKI certificate prior to applying for an account. Applications for a new account are on the homepage of the SEA 04RM/05N Web site.

Uniformed and civilian Navy personnel can obtain more information on obtaining a PKI certificate at https://infosec.navy.mil/pki or by contacting the Navy PKI help desk at 1-800-304-4636 / DSN 588-4286, email: itac@infosec.navy.mil.

For NAVSEA contractors, PKI information may be found on VERISIGN's Web site at www.verisign.com/products-services/security-services/pki/index.html. Otherwise, contractors should contact their local PKI resource for support.

Help in navigating the online GSO is available on the Web page through the help guide link.
