Independent monitors in Sri Lanka have warned that an alleged LTTE attack that sank a navy gunboat along with eight sailors, the first major incident since the two sides met in Switzerland last month, could slip the island nation back to war.
The warning issued by the Scandinavian Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) stated that they did not accept the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's (LTTE) denial of any involvement in Saturday's attack against a navy fast attack craft, a media report said here on Monday.
The SLMM asked both Colombo and the Tamil Tigers to live up to the pledges they gave last month during their talks in Switzerland to uphold the truce.
Referring to a spike in violence that has claimed at least 153 lives, the SLMM voiced its concern that if the parties do not take responsibility the situation could gradually worsen and escalate beyond what they had faced in December and January.
The SLMM also rejected the government's position on the LTTE's main allegation that paramilitary units were operating in
government-held areas to stage attacks against the main Tiger group.
