30 Decapitated Bodies Found North of Baghdad

26 March 2006

Iraqi police say they found 30 decapitated bodies near the city of Baquba Sunday.

The bodies are the latest to be found in Iraq. Several showing signs of torture were found in Baghdad last week.

At least four other Iraqis were killed in attacks Sunday. A roadside bomb killed a teenage boy as he walked to school in Basra. A bomb in Baghdad killed a woman, and gunmen killed two people, including a police officer near Baquba.

Mortar shells landed near the home in Najaf of radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, wounding two of his guards and a child.

The violence comes as Iraq's Shi'ite, Sunni Arab and Kurdish leaders failed again to agree on a government, despite increasing U.S. pressure.

A delegation led by U.S. Senator John McCain met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and called for the stalemate to be resolved soon.

The high-level congressional visit comes as several opinion polls in the United States show American voters increasingly worried that civil war could break out in Iraq.
