EADS to deliver mission computer for Tiger combat helicopter
* Supports navigation and displays tactical information
* Part of the helicopter avionic system
Friedrichshafen, 23 March 2006
EADS Defence & Security Systems has received a contract from the European Purchasing Authority OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération matiere d'Armement) for the adaptation, production investment phase and supply of the mission computer "EuroGrid" for the Spanish/French Tiger combat helicopter variant. The contract which has been signed with EADS Defence Electronics has a volume of nearly €20 millions.
The EuroGrid system includes both the tactical mission computer as well as the flight data recorder. This device has already been successfully used in the German, French and Australian Tiger variants. "EuroGrid was developed and produced for the demands on the Tiger and NH90 helicopters and reduces the work load on the pilot considerably," stated Bernhard Gerwert, Head of EADS Defence Electronics.
The tactical mission computer simplifies the navigation by also displaying the tactical situation on a digital map for the Tiger pilots. In addition, it supports the helicopter crew by showing and recording of video data, displaying data-base supported obstacle information, as well as data communication between the helicopter and the ground station. The flight data recorder also records flight condition data for evaluation on the ground which can be used both for maintenance purposes as well as possible reconstruction of crashes.
