CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 43, the “Battle Cats,” hosted Royal Canadian Sea Cadets from Ontario, Canada, March 14.
The tour highlighted the many ways HSL-43 qualifies, trains and deploys combat-ready detachments aboard U.S. warships as part of a coalition force operation.
Once a year, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps travel to different naval bases around the world to gain experience and knowledge of other navies.
“This tour gives the cadets a positive experience on what the U.S. Navy is all about,” said Sorana Sopterian, a sea cadet. “It shows that the Navy is more than just ships.”
The cadets toured the squadron’s facilities, sat in an SH-60B Seahawk helicopter, viewed rescue litter demonstrations and watched helicopters take off from the North Island Naval Air Station airfield.
“The cadets met dedicated and committed Sailors, both men and women, who come from diverse backgrounds and different parts of the county, working hard together to achieve a common goal: successfully accomplishing the Navy's mission," said Cmdr. Arturo Garcia, commanding officer of HSL-43.
“This demonstration shows the cadets the many...duties associated with our operation aboard the SH-60B,” said Aviation Warfare Systems Operator 2nd Class (AW) Robert Hassin, assigned to HSL-43.
For some of the children, it was the first time on a military base, and their first experience seeing and touching a helicopter.
"We hope that by visiting HSL-43, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets will develop a better understanding of the different roles that naval helicopters perform within the U.S. Navy,” said Garcia.
