ABOARD USS BONHOMME RICHARD, At Sea (NNS) -- The Multipurpose Amphibious Assault Ship USS Bonhomme Richard (BHR) (LHD 6) pulled its mooring lines away from Naval Station San Diego’s Pier 13 Feb. 22 and got underway for the first time in more than six months.
This underway period came after BHR completed its Dock Planned Maintenance Availability (DPMA) and successfully demonstrated her ability to respond to shipboard casualties, such as a main space fires, man overboard and general quarters, during the crew certification and Light off Assessment.
“Sea Trials are a milestone in beginning the ship’s training cycle,” said Capt. Steve Greene, BHR commanding officer. “We are now starting to get BHR ready to serve in the global war on terrorism again, as this ship did so successfully last year.”
With a price tag of more than $30 million, DPMA brought improvements to BHR’s weapon systems, engineering plants and general habitability.
“During this underway, we put those improvements to the test,” Greene said.
With DPMA ending, new challenges face BHR’s crew as they enter the training cycle and prepare for future operations at sea.
“BHR has been preparing for the training cycle since we began DPMA," Greene said. "Our Sailors and Marines are up to the challenges and are excited about the opportunities ahead of them."
