VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training and Evaluation Unit (EODTEU) 2 conducted tactical combat causalty care (TCCC) training March 6 for Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Group 2, at Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Va.
EODTEU 2 is the primary element that prepares Navy EOD personnel and detachments for deployment by the Atlantic Fleet, Mine Warfare Command, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Central Command.
TCCC training simulates a hostile environment where students must perform frontline first aid after neutralizing the enemy threat.
“What we want to do is give a basic medical and first-aid knowledge so they can stabilize patients from various injuries until medical help arrives,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman (DSW/SW/AW) Paul Muir, independent duty corpsman and instructor for EODTEU 2.
Although EOD personnel aren’t formally trained in medical procedures, this course is designed to give them enough knowledge to provide immediate assistance during combat operations in the field.
Students are given a personal point of injury medical care kit containing a wide variety of supplies needed in the field. They are also encouraged to be resourceful and utilize items they find in the field; tree branches, rocks and clothing so they’re not limited to the kit.
According to Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (DV) Nathanael Warren, instructor for EODTEU 2, students are forced to think outside the box so that it will build their confidence in the kit.
“We’re trying to get these guys to use that kit,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (DV) Nathanael Warren. “That’s what you got to save your life; you're by yourself now, make it work.”
