CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VRC) 30, “the Providers,” Detachment 2, “the Roughnecks,” deployed March 5, with USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Carrier Strike Group (CSG) on a Western Pacific deployment.
VRC-30’s primary mission is to transport cargo, mail and passengers, including U.S. and foreign diplomats from shore to the carrier.
“We have been asked to be proficient in carrier operations. We will perform our duties to the best of our ability,” said Senior Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic (AW) Troy Diggs, VRC 30 Det. 2 leading chief petty officer.
Each detachment uses two aircraft to accomplish the carrier onboard delivery mission for their assigned Pacific Fleet strike group.
“We are taking two planes with us. Our job is to keep those planes working and help whomever needs it out there,” said Airman Derek Hairston assigned to VRC-30.
“Our mission while we are out is to provide logistic support to the strike group. While the group is out at sea, we will prepare ourselves for our mission and fly from the ports we are stationed at and bring the supplies to the ships,” added Aviation Structural Mechanic Equipmentman 1st Class (AW/SW) Alfonso Escamilla, VRC-30 Det. 2 leading petty officer.
A few of the detachment’s Sailors are deploying for the first time and they have an idea of how to spend it.
“I thought I would be nervous with my first deployment, but I am ready to go,” said Airman Apprentice Michael Choy assigned to VRC-30.
The Roughnecks had nothing but good things to say about the deployment and each other.
“We have good camaraderie. We will get a lot of work done and have fun while we are at it,” said Hairston.
“We just want to do our part, do it well and come home safe,” added Diggs.
The Roughnecks' last completed deployment was in March 2005 with the Lincoln CSG, which included humanitarian assistance to tsunami-stricken regions of Southeast Asia. Its previous deployment was extended to more than 10 months while supporting operations in Iraq.
CSG 9 includes Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, comprised of Fighter Attack Squadron (VFA) 2, VFA-151, VFA-34, VFA-137, Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 131, Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 116, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (HS) 2, Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light (HSL) 47, and VRC-30.
CSG 9 also includes USS Mobile Bay (CG 53), USS Russell (DDG 59), USS Shoup (DDG 86) and the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 9.
