JAPAN (NNS) -- Currently deployed to Okinawa, Japan, for six months, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 4 Air Detachment (Air Det) is re-deploying to the Philippines to participate in Exercise Balikatan 2006 in March.
Air Det’s mission during this evolution will be to construct a three-room school house. The impact of this exercise on the local community will be immense.
“Overcrowding in tiny classrooms is the problem we are being sent to fix,” commented Lt. April Lemons, Air Det’s officer in charge. “We’ll be building more classrooms and enhancing facilities that will improve the learning experience for the students.”
This particular assignment is challenging because the construction will take place in an area where the threat of terrorism is high. Over the past weeks and months, NMCB 4 Air Det has practiced their construction skills and refreshed their military knowledge to meet those challenges. Long hours and much effort have been spent preparing everything down to the last detail, leaving nothing to chance.
“The last two weeks have been busy as we get ready to leave,” stated Equipment Operator 3rd Class (SCW) Jubbie Acutim, referring to the countless hours spent weighing, loading and securing the necessary equipment and supplies needed to complete the exercise. “Due to the dangers in the area, proper preparations are essential.”
Like Seabees everywhere, NMCB 4 Air Det is upholding the long standing tradition of helping the less fortunate in difficult places. They take their job seriously and live by their motto, “With compassion for others, we build -- we fight, for peace with freedom.”
