Nepal-King-Situation
King Gyanendra has started consultations with his loyalists on the present political situation in Nepal even as a former premier asked him to follow the constitution and respect the Supreme Court ruling that recognized the people as the source of sovereign power.
Former prime minister and Rastriya Janashakti Party President Surya Bahadur Thapa believes the country's problems could be resolved if the king and the political parties were ready to play the roles provided for them in the constitution, a media report said here today.
He also asked Gyanendra to respect the Supreme Court ruling which recognized the people as the source of sovereign power, and said the king cannot arbitrarily invoke the controversial Article 127 of the constitution while giving its verdict annulling the anti-graft commission created by the royal government.
"It is an appropriate opportunity to move ahead with the constitution as meeting point, and to take the court's verdict as baseline or initial point," Thapa told the central committee meeting of his party.
The king, who recently offered reconciliation to the parties, failed to materialize the idea due to lack of mutual trust among constitutional forces, he said.
The former premier's remarks came as the king continued his political consultations with loyalists, including senior ministers, on the present political situation of the country.
Gyanendra met Tulsi Giri and Kirtinidhi Bista, vice-chairmen of the council of ministers on Tuesday, in Pokhara.
He also met Ravindranath Sharma, senior leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party faction led by Home Minister Kamal Thapa, and another royalist leader, Rajeshwor Devkota.
He will also be meeting House of Representatives Speaker Taranath Ranabhat, highly placed sources said.
