General Dynamics to Provide Communications System at Army Hospital in Alaska

NEEDHAM, Mass. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded General Dynamics Network Systems a $1.1 million information technology (IT) contract to provide design and installation services for the nurse call system at the Bassett Army Community Hospital at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. Work is expected to be completed in August 2006. General Dynamics Network Systems is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).

The nurse call system will enable real-time, one-to-one communications between the nursing staff and patients, allowing for directed outreach and response and reducing the use of the public address system. The system enhances patient safety under the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirements and facilitates patient privacy by limiting the number of people involved with confidential patient communications, as recommended by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

“We have developed a solid working partnership with Bassett Hospital to ensure that nurses can quickly obtain critical information that allows them to be more responsive while enhancing patient privacy and safety," said Ted Hengst, a vice president and general manager at General Dynamics Network Systems. "We are pleased to be able to support the 450 health care providers and staff at Fort Wainwright, whose efforts are critical in that region.”

This is the third contract awarded to General Dynamics by the Army Corps of Engineers for IT support at this Army hospital, bringing the company’s total work at Bassett to over $3.1 million. General Dynamics is also providing voice switch services under the Long Term Life Cycle Support program as part of a $1.7 million contract awarded last year.
