At Least 26 Killed in Iraq Bombings

01 March 2006

Bomb attacks in the Iraqi capital have killed at least 26 people and wounded nearly 60 others Wednesday.

The worst was a car bomb that killed at least 23 people in a Shi'ite Muslim area of southeast Baghdad.

The carnage followed an even bloodier day Tuesday, when bombs killed at least 68 people across Baghdad - mostly at religious sites.

Sectarian violence has surged in Iraq since the bombing last Wednesday against the Askariya shrine in Samarra - one of the holiest sites in Shi'ite Islam.

Since then, hundreds of people have been killed and dozens of mosques damaged in reprisal attacks between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
