SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The landing dock ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) returned to San Diego Feb. 20 after completing a seven-month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism.
Pearl Harbor, along with the rest of Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 1, conducted maritime security operations, participated in Exercise Bright Star in Egypt, and served as an afloat staging base in the North Persian Gulf while training with the Iraqi navy and protecting Iraqi oil terminals.
In October, Pearl Harbor transported several tons of tractors, heavy trucks, bulldozers and other heavy equipment requested by the government of Pakistan after an earthquake in the country’s Kashmir region killed more than 80,000 people.
“We offloaded a lot of equipment for people we never saw except for on TV,” said Boatswain's Mate 1st Class (SW) Shelby Jones, Pearl Harbor’s Sailor of the Year. “But it felt good to know we brought them supplies that will help them rebuild the things they lost."
Pearl Harbor families are also proud of the humanitarian assistance the ship provided.
“My daughter has always been socially conscious," said Bridget Guccione, the mother of Ens. Lia Guccione. This was Guccione’s first deployment since graduating from ROTC at Iowa State University. “She would tell me that it was difficult, but she would always say, ‘It’s my job mom,’ and that makes me very proud.”
ESG 1 was comprised of the general-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Tarawa (LHA 1), the amphibious transport dock USS Cleveland (LPD 7), and Pearl Harbor, along with the embarked Marines of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
