EADS Secure Networks modernises the "RUBIS" network of the French Gendarmerie (Military Police)
* First secure national digital radio communications network migrated to IP (Internet Protocol)
* New applications for users
* Renewed confidence of the French National Gendarmerie in the TETRAPOL technology
Paris, 21 February 2006
EADS Secure Networks has signed a four-year contract with the French National Gendarmerie on modernisation of its “RUBIS” secure radio communications network. This contract, worth € 32 million, will enable the French National Gendarmerie to ensure long-term viability of its radio communications network, benefit from new applications and better respond to operational requirements.
The network modernisation project fits into a huge programme to renew means of information and communication undertaken by the French National Gendarmerie to support re-organisation of its command structures. Thus, for this first stage in modernisation of the RUBIS network, the French National Gendarmerie’s objectives cover replacement of the current commutation core by the new generation TETRAPOL IP switch, deployment of the latest programme version V35IP, development of a new generation VHF mobile terminal and a UHF/VHF gateway.
The newly modernised RUBIS network will thus contribute to enhanced integration of data into command and information tools and will enable the French National Gendarmerie to more effectively respond to the changing needs of operational units both on an everyday basis and when it comes to crisis management, thanks to new functionalities, especially: improved access to data applications such as national files and the Schengen area (registrations, vehicle log books, persons missing, etc.), short message service, management of status situations so that the command echelon can follow progress out in the field of the operational teams without having to resort to voice communication, geographical localisation of units using GPS chips equipping mobile terminals.
In addition, adoption of the Internet Protocol will allow availability of the communication network to be improved and retain optimum security as TETRAPOL allows for end-to-end encryption of voice and data transmission. Terminals are also equipped with a repudiation mechanism so you can block the hand-held communication device remotely if lost or stolen.
The RUBIS network is right at the heart of the operational set-up of the French National Gendarmerie. RUBIS was developed by EADS at the end of the 1980s and has been deployed throughout France since 2000 to become the first national digital PMR network in the world. This new contract signals the French National Gendarmerie’s confidence in EADS Secure Networks and TETRAPOL technology. It also opens up the way for a cycle of modernisation of existing networks.
Since RUBIS, EADS Secure Networks has set up a large number of networks in France and internationally. Nowadays, one of the main world players in the sector, EADS Secure Networks can now credit itself with the implementation, in co-operation with partner companies, of 130 radio digital networks in some 60 countries, including 30 national networks intended for security organisations (with 11 in Europe).
In addition, EADS is the only firm in the world in a position to offer secure digital radio communications solutions, systems and terminals based on the three main technological standards that apply, i.e. TETRAPOL, TETRA and P25.
These solutions are covered by constant research & development investments so as to satisfy needs expressed by users and thus guarantee the quality of EADS’ response.
The Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) Business Unit is the "Systems House" of EADS and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence & Security Systems Division (DS).
EADS Defence & Security Systems, with revenues of about € 5.4 billion in 2004 and roughly 23,000 employees across ten nations, forms the defence and security pillar within EADS. It offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and homeland security units. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missile systems, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems with manned and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), battlefield management systems, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, and related services.
EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2004, EADS generated revenues of € 31.8 billion and employed a workforce of about 110,000.
