ATK Conducts Successful BTERM Short-range Engineering Test

ATK's Precision Round Hits Within 2 Meters of the Target at a Range of 8 Miles *ATK's Flight Test Yields Valuable Engineering Data

Feb 21, 2006

Minneapolis, February 22, 2006 – Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK), the United States Navy, The C.S. Draper Laboratory, and Custom Analytical Engineering Services (CAES) successfully conducted a challenging short-range, unboosted, guided flight test of ATK’s ballistic trajectory extended range munition (BTERM) in support of the Navy’s extended range munition (ERM) requirement. In this engineering test, the advanced, BTERM guided projectile flew more than 8 miles and landed within two meters of the target. This is the latest in a series of engineering tests leading up to guided and boosted flight-tests, currently being scheduled for this spring.

The flight test achieved all test objectives including high-g gun launch survivability, muzzle exit conditions, guidance accuracy and terminal angle. The test demonstrated the guidance section’s ability to meet accuracy requirements under difficult short time of flight conditions. The guidance section contains the Low Cost Guidance Electronics Unit (LCGEU) and an innovative single axis control actuation system. Combined, these units provide a robust and affordable solution for accurately guiding gun-launched munitions within a few meters of a target.

"Not only did this test demonstrate the robustness of the BTERM guidance and control design, but it also provided valuable engineering data to support the next stage of the program — guided, boosted flight-tests," said Tom Wilson, President, ATK Precision Systems Group.
