Iraqi Gunmen Kill 5 Guards, Kidnap Iraqi Businessman

17 February 2006

Iraqi police say gunmen wearing Iraqi special forces uniforms have kidnapped a wealthy businessman and his son, after killing five of their bodyguards.

Police say Ghalib Abdul Hussein Kubba, director-general of the Basra International Bank, was abducted from his home in Baghdad late Thursday, along with his son.

Police say no demands have been made so far.

Separately, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told a House of Representatives committee the perpetrators of the abuse shown in the latest Abu Ghraib images have already been punished.

The Iraqi government and public expressed outrage at the images, which were first shown on Australian television this week. Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari's office condemned the abuse.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
